02—What Data We Collect, Why, and on What Legal Basis

We collect the minimum personal data needed to provide the service. The table below sets out exactly what we collect, why, and the UK GDPR lawful basis for each.

Data collected Why we collect it Lawful basis Notes
Email address To create and manage your account and allow you to log in Contract performance (Article 6(1)(b) UK GDPR) We use your email address as your account identifier. We do not use it for marketing.
Password To let you log in securely Contract performance We never store your actual password. It is converted to a cryptographic hash before storage. We cannot read or recover your password from our database.
Chapter completion and progress data To show you your own learning progress through the curriculum Contract performance This data is yours. It is used only to display your progress in the app. It is not shared with third parties.
Email address patterns (anonymised analysis) To understand how different types of users engage with the curriculum, for the purpose of educational research and platform improvement Legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f) UK GDPR) We may analyse whether email addresses come from school, college, or teacher-training domains to classify user types at a group level. This produces anonymised, aggregated results only. No individual is identified in any research output. See Section 5.

We do not collect your name, date of birth, phone number, home address, or payment information.

03—How Long We Keep Your Data

We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. You can ask us to delete your account and all associated data at any time — see Section 8 below. There is no minimum account period.

DataRetention
Account data (email address) Retained while the account is active. Deleted within 5 working days of a deletion request.
Hashed password Deleted with the account.
Chapter completion and progress data Retained while the account is active. Deleted with the account.
Aggregated anonymised research data Research findings describe groups of users, not individuals, and do not contain personal data. They are not subject to deletion requests as they do not identify anyone.
Backup data Backups may retain data for up to 30 days after a deletion request. After that period, your data is fully removed from all systems.

04—Who We Share Your Data With

We do not sell your personal data to anyone. We do not share your personal data with third parties for marketing purposes.

We may share your data only in the following limited circumstances:

No other sharing occurs. Your chapter completion data is yours and is not accessible to your school, teacher, or any third party through this platform.

Note for schools: If your school or local authority requires access to pupil progress data through Go Berserk, this would constitute a separate data sharing arrangement and would need to be covered by a Data Sharing Agreement between your school and Imphora Limited.

05—Research Use of Data

We are involved in educational research to understand how coding is taught and learned in different school settings. As part of this research, we may analyse patterns in account email addresses — for example, whether an address comes from a school, a teacher training college, or another educational institution — to classify users into broad groups such as primary pupils, secondary pupils, teachers, or trainee teachers.

This classification is carried out by us on our own database. It is not shared with third parties in any form that identifies individuals.

Any research we publish, present, or use to support educational decisions:

Our lawful basis for this analysis is legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f) UK GDPR). We have a legitimate interest as an educational publisher in understanding how different types of users engage with our curriculum, and in contributing to the evidence base for computing education in schools. We have assessed this interest against your right to privacy and concluded that it does not override your interests, because the analysis produces only anonymised group-level results and does not have any impact on individual users.

You have the right to object to this processing at any time. If you object, we will stop analysing your email address for research classification purposes. Contact us at to object.

06—Security

We take the security of your data seriously. The following measures are in place:

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we apply industry-standard practices appropriate to the type and volume of data we process.

If we become aware of a data breach that is likely to result in a risk to your rights and freedoms, we will notify you and the ICO as required by UK GDPR (Articles 33 and 34).
